The College Football Playoff (CFP) was created 14 years after the BCS was established. The CFP committee ranks teams 1-25, similar to the AP and BCS rankings, each week before determining the top. The BCS human polls are subject to bias, which has been cited as one reason the University of Utah was kept out of the 2008 championship game. 4 One third of the standings are based on how the coaches rank the teams, which assumes that coaches have time to watch all of the games while also preparing their teams each week.

1. USC Trojans – No other team can match USC’s strength on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Mark Sanchez looks like he’s ready to follow the footsteps of great Trojan Quarterbacks, Carson Palmer and Matt Lienart. And last year’s defense, which ranked second nationally, looks stronger in 2008. For a team that lost 10 players to the NFL, they sure do look good.
2. Ohio State Buckeyes – Eighteen starters return to the Buckeyes in 2008. The offense features Heisman Trophy candidate Chris Wells at running back and Tyrelle Pryor, the number one Quarterback recruit in the nation. The defense returns James Laurinaitis at linebacker who could potentially be the number one pick in next year’s NFL draft.
3. Oklahoma Sooners – With the best offensive line in the nation, which features two Outland Trophy candidates, the Sooners willscore more easily than George Clooney at a singles bar.Lombardi Trophy candidates abound on thedefense, highlighted by Defensive End, Auston English. Only injuries can stop the Sooners in 2008.
4. Georgia Bulldogs – Quarterback Matthew Stafford leads a balanced offensethat can either air it out or jam the ball down a defense’sthroat with equal efficiency. The defense, one of the best incountry, is pure ouch. National title aspirations are valid.
5. Missouri Tigers – Two Heisman Trophy candidates on offense + 10 returningstarters on defense = Powerhouse Team. QuarterbackChase Daniel will give defensive coordinators moreheadaches than Jack Daniels.
6. Clemson Tigers – Coach Tommy Bowden finally emerges from the shadowof his father, Bobby Bowden. James Davis and C.J.Spiller, college football’s best running tandem, joinrecord-setting quarterback Cullen Harper in the backfieldto form one of the most lethal attacks in the nation.
7. Florida Gators – Two words: Tim Tebow. Last year’s Heisman Trophywinner will be complemented by a running game thisseason thanks to the arrival of USC-transfer EmmanuelMoody. If only Tebow could play defense.
8. Pittsburgh Panthers – Just like Kansas in 2007, Pitt will be thewhere-the-hell-did-they-come-from team of 2008. Aftertwo straight gonzo recruiting classes, this is the seasoncoach Dave Wannstedt returns the Pitt program to glory.Freshman All-American LeSean McCoy gives Pitt thethe type of running game not seen since Tony Dorsettran his way to a Heisman Trophy.
9. Virginia Tech Hokies – Frank Beamer combined with their easy non-conference schedule in 2008 is worth eight wins, regardlessof who the Hokies have on the field. Despite the loss ofseven starters, the defense still looks strong and loaded with young talent, particularly on the line. Every defense should have a starting cornerback named 'Macho Harris'.

10. West Virginia Mountaineers – New head coach Bill Stewart plans to air the ball out in2008. Not a bad idea with Heisman Trophy candidatePatrick White as his quarterback. White’s adeptness atpassing and running can cause defensivecoordinators to crumple to their knees and weep openly.
11. LSU Tigers - The defending national champion Tigers lost a lot of key players this offseason including All-American Glenn Dorsey to the NFL and QB Ryan Perrilloux for other reasons. However, they do return three defensive linemen and four offensive linemen and have tons of speed in the skill positions. Quarterback remains the big question mark for the the Tigers. Things could get ugly in the bayou unless one of their young arms can step in and lead this team to some (ugly or otherwise) SEC wins.
12. Texas Longhorns - Not many teams will want to mess with Texas in 2008.New defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, ano-nonsense taskmaster, will return the defense back toelite status. And quarterback Colt McCoy will again provethat he was recruited by the Longhorns for his arm ratherthan for his Texas-perfect name.
13. Texas Tech Red Raiders – Ten starters return to the nation’s second-rated offense,Including quarterback Graham Harrell (5,708 yards, 48TDs). But it will be the improved play by the defense thatelevates the Red Raiders to contender status in 2008.
14. Arizona State Sun Devils – Improved play by the offensive line will, not coincidentally, improve the Sun Devils’ standing. The defense should bejust as disruptive in 2008 as it was in 2007. Anotherwinning season just might curb coach Dennis Erickson’swandering ways.

15. Penn State Nittney Lions – If Joe Paterno’s 43rd year as head coach proves to be hislast, it could be one of his best. The defense drips withtalent, especially along the line. And the offense is two-deep at every skill position.
16. Auburn Tigers – Running Back U goes to the spread offense this year.Even if it falters Auburn possesses the type of shut-downdefense that can carry the team. The defensive line, ledby Antonio Coleman, rates with the best in the country.
17. Kansas Jayhawks – The Jayhawks won’t be taking anyone by surprise in2008. Last year’s 12-1 team returns quarterback ToddReesing, meaning there should not be much of a drop-offwith last year’s number one offense in the Big 12.
18. Illinois Fighting Illini – Coach Ron Zook’s Fighting Ilini will prove that last seasonwas no fluke. Quarterback Juice Williams is almostindefensible. And the defense possesses both speed andstrength. Look for Illinois to make another Rose Bowl run.
19. Boise State Broncos – One of the nation’s most creative offenses will becomeeven more creative in 2008 with a more up-tempo attack. If the defense improves in stopping the run, the Broncoscould return to the BCS picture.

20. Fresno State Bulldogs – Coach Pat Hill has his eyes on a BCS invitation thanksto 10 returning starters on offense. A difficultnon-conference schedule – Wisconsin, Rutgers, UCLA –will determine whether Hill’s aspirations transform intoreality.
21. Colorado Buffalos – Following two straight solid recruiting years, Coach DanHawkins looks to have enough talent to make the Buffsa contender. Prized running back recruit Darrell Scottcould be the difference maker. This team could shock the top 25 this college football season.
22. Michigan State Spartans – After losing five of five games by six points or less lastseason, the Spartans should be better in 2008 atclosing games. A healthy Javon Ringer at running backwill make Michigan State a Big Ten and college football top 25 dark horse.
23. Arkansas Razorbacks – Despite all the acrimony that followed coach Bobby Petrinoto Arkansas, there’s no denying his success on thecollege level. His decision to convert the Razorbacks’offense into a passing attack will take advantage of theteam’s wide receiver depth.

24. BYU Cougars – Holy Lavell Edwards, BYU is back. Last year’s high-ampedattack that averaged 442 yards per game returns 10starters. And the defense boasts an experienced interiorseven. Look for the Cougars to dominate the MountainWest and compete for BCS recognition.
25. South Florida Bulls – Quarterback Matt Grothe and defensive end George Selviegive the Bulls dominating players on both sides of the ball.Entire opposing team game plans are designed aroundthem. A strong supporting cast makes South Florida a tough college football top 25 teamto pin in 2008.
